He made a playlist for me and this version of “You are the reason” by Calum Scott was there. I listened to it so many times - my feelings are a little raw tonight.

Okay, its good, but Hannah Reid's is the best one. Its just the truth and you cant tell me otherwise!! [-x
OK, I'm sold... she is the best. The way she starts out low then ramps to a high pitch is awesome!

LOL, a "bit" off note is quite a compliment! thank you B-)

I also recorded this other song that day:

which is way more than a bit off tone, and is at the very edge of my vocal register :)

My plan is to try these again a year from now and see the difference.

Oh yes... my daughter, she's the real singer and the reason we all started this. In fact, we're starting to get her a band so she can start going out to sing for real :D

You should hear me when I started, LOL :))
It's really amazing how far technique and practice can take you when you just don't naturally have it. While I still don't like the way I sound, I love the progress I've made in this past year.

About hitting a wall and knowing your capabilities... the teacher that I had (who quit the school, and who was... well, you might remember) never liked me trying those songs, but I just had to keep pushing and pushing to reach the point of no more progress. I'm not there yet, "Bohemian Rhapsody" here I go B-)
My "test" song is Yellow, from Coldplay.. I've recorded it like 30 times. It ranges from "what is this noise" to last week's "oh, he's trying to sing that" =))

My current (male) teacher, on the other hand, is very, very good at letting me know, with great subtlety, that there are the "practice songs", like these two, intended to push the limits and further the techniques, and the songs that I should sing for real...
I'm still trying to find one in the last group though :-? I tried songs well within my vocal register. They sound just as bad, but with no explanation :((

The one thing that I learned from singing when you are, let's say, "trying", like me, is that you get to communicate the value of doing what you love, not necessarily what you are good at. And people get that.

Well done Mr Spock. Do all those things that bring passion back into your life and makes your heart sing. Sometimes it's not so much about what SO doesn't do for us/bring to us, but more about what we don't do for ourselves.
