news about site upgrade

Post by David »

Ive upgraded the board software to the latest version (3.1) as it gives enhanced security from hacking and the like. The new version has some other benefits - for the geeks amongst you, you can read them here: https://www.phpbb.com/about/launch/

Downside is some of the mods we had on the old version 3.0 software are no longer compatible. This includes the blog and newly incorporated chat modules.

The back end database still contains all the blog entries so these have not been lost. There is talk of a new blog module being created.

Im looking to see if there is an updated chat module.

Good news is the latest version is meant to be responsive which means the forum will resize for tablets and smart phones making it easier to use from these devices.

Security of data has to come first. Even more so given the sensitive nature of what we discuss here. Ive prolonged the upgrade as long as i can but decided to bite the bullet.

Hopefully as more developers write aps for the new platform, so we can benefit.

I like the smileys, and most of the changes (I haven't really been here long enough to know how it was before though!)

No way I would want to put my posts on social media though!!

Gutted about the blog. Should there just be a section called blog instead?

The blog feature we had before had the ability to restrict access to friends only. A blog section at the moment would be visible to anyone.

There is a blog component being developed ATM, but no release date scheduled. Ill keep an eye out and when released see how easy it is to move over the original blog posts (that are all archived) over.

Ive removed the post to social media feature as one user felt it went against the site's "relative" anonymity.

Good point about security and reinitiated blog settings. Having a secure area where users could give limited access to more sensitive writings was a good feature for me in the early days of my struggles.
