Another Obsession; Human Trafficking Awareness Thread

Post by JupiterTaco »

Here is another one of my obsessions. I thought really hard about where to put this, or whether to put it up at all, but since it's another obsession of mine, I thought this would be a good place to post it. But it's a common and increasing crime that takes away one's dignity, privacy, and very life.

If one looks one can see the similarities between human trafficking and workplace bullying. The effects of both on the victim are not only similar but follow people for a long time. I'm aware that many of us, myself included, have the "freedom" to quit a bad job and get another one, and I most certainly do. But not only does not everybody have the ability to do that due to financial difficulty or job market, or any other reason, but as long as one is forced to sell their services for a paycheck, it's a similar situation. That being said, I'm not that ignorant that they are the same thing. There is a serious danger to being held against one's will and to have violence and the loss of their basic human rights and more, to be used to be held in slavery. It is astounding not only that people are doing this but getting away with it.

I have been obsessed with this subject for quite some time now, and the only reason I can think of as to why that is (besides that it's a crime and is terribly wrong) is that I know how it feels to be trapped in a situation that despite good-ol' U.S. regulation, could turn bad at any time. Bullies never not attack, they plan their attack accordingly.

So anyway I'll share movies, articles, news, etc. that have to do with the subject here. Before I get too far into what's happening today, I wanted to go ahead and share this article from fourteen years ago when the subject of human trafficking on the U.S./Mexico border was first investigated in detail (to my knowledge anyway...) I realize that this article is not new and probably doesn't represent today's statistics, but this is the first time I've been able to find it after years of searching for the article on which the 2007 movie, Trade, was based. Though to be fair, I didn't see the movie until 2012.
So my apologies if you've already read it;

www.nytimes.com/2004/01/25/magazine/the ... -door.html

For perspective, here's the trailer for the movie Trade;

Though fiction, it is based on the article and shows some of the examples of real places which were covered in Landesman's article in which this terrible crime was committed circa this article.

Here also is another article challenging Landesman's article and the statistics around that time;

www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politic ... sited.html

Which just amazes me, I mean, why is it so hard for people to grasp that this is something that is happening right under our noses? It's true that there could be less or more victims than are estimated and those that are rescued or escape, but isn't it too much to happen to one person let alone the statistics of being in the thousands worldwide like they are right now???

Not to mention, trafficking is a tough crime to prosecute. Just like sex crimes are notoriously hard to prosecute. Both cases go back to "he said, she said" about events that happened, which can be hard to prove without real physical evidence, except maybe in cases where video evidence exists (In one scene in the movie Trade, the Polish victim Veronica was videotaped being raped).

That's assuming that victims are ever found and helped at all! The very nature of this crime, whether homegrown or internationally, is how connected these people are, how there will always be more, and always be more desperate, destitute, less-connected victims for them to get their hands on! There are always people to pass the victims onto. It never ends. The only strength in these perpetrators, are their numbers! That's it! It's quite scary actually.

Damn JT, you have some dark interests. The Slate article isn't opening. I read the NYT article, the part about trading toddlers was just too much . A crime of this scale is only possible by a small help from scattered underlings. Many of these 'helpers' from the airport authorities to immigration officers to restaurant workers i doubt they could all be so evil as to know what exactly they are doing, trading children. For a little money they look the other way, or maybe its coercion?
Did you read that bit about sex being more 'adventurous' cos of hardcore porn. That was 14 yrs back. Such a thin veil of moral reasonability we live over.
By the way you can check out a show called Chance. Its basically about a clinical psychologist who seeks to help his clients in real time by interfering in their lives on the sly ,season one has a main character who was trafficked from Mexico. The show has some problems, but its generally good cos of Hugh Laurie, that guy can carry anything.

Yeah it's the kind of shit that makes me want to go hardcore vigilante. I don't know exactly how I got so interested in this problem. I've always known somewhat about it, even read the Reader's Digest article called Slave In The Garage about Shyima Hall. I later read her book. When I first signed up on Netflix six years ago, some of those movies, there was Trade, the two-part TV show Human Trafficking, The Missing (based on a novel) and another movie I don't remember the title of anymore, were in my suggestions list and I watched The Missing because so many actors and actresses I like were in that one. The craziness just snowballed from there I guess... :-\

Part of the problem is that in some areas people and even governments and their workers are so poor that the traffickers can pay them a lot more money than they could get on their own. One would like to think the majority of people would not think it's enough to turn their heads to it but who knows...then you've got countries like Mexico whose governments don't care about their people, especially their indigenous people, who are high-risk people that fall prey to this sort of thing. They also don't see women as people. A friend of mine from there said basically that women are a commodity down there, they can be abducted and abused and nobody really cares. They can be made to work, have babies, do whatever the man wants them to do. There are lots of other countries that see women and even children in the same manner around the world so it's sad.

That's why for so long I tried not to let it bother me that I felt objectified by men when women around the world can't even walk out their own front doors without risking being raped, abducted, abused, killed or whatever, and can't go looking for a job without worrying that a high number of job ads in some places are fake ads placed by traffickers.

And then you've got countries like Belarus trying to tax unemployed citizens. :-o That country is a major source country of trafficking victims. X(

I'll have to check out Chance.

Here's a documentary about Tenancingo (Mexico).

The Missing is great. Ive seen both the parts. The first one is better though.
Areas hit by Natural disasters also see a spike in trading kids, places like Haiti, and Nepal after the Earthquakes.

I know what you're talking about, I have seen that, really sad!

But I was talking about the movie with Tommy Lee Jones in it. It was based on a novel called The Last Ride.
